The National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) is a multidisciplinary Research Centre which was established on 1958. In its 40 years of operation the NHRF has developed scientific and research activity in the areas of chemistry, biology and biotechnology, physics, material sciences and historical research. In particular, the Institute of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (IOPC) is one of the 6 Institutes of the NHRF and was established with the objective of pursuing research in the areas of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (bioactive ether phospholipids, reactive oxygen species scavengers with antiarrhythmic or neuroprotective properties, novel neuroprotective hetrerocyclic compounds, novel analgesic cannabinoid analogues, neuroactive steroids), Organic and Organometallic chemistry (Main Group metal chemistry, homogeneous catalysis and synthesis of functional materials), Biophysical and Computational Analysis (Studies on the mechanism of drug action using physicochemical and biophysical methods), Structural Biology and Chemistry (aiming at understanding the structural aspects of a number of diverse biological issues that include the cell cycle, signal transduction pathways, enzyme mechanism, proteins of the inflammatory response for the purpose of structure-based drug design). In April 2002 the IOPC was characterised as a “Centre of Excellence” by a peer review process performed by foreign evaluators based on the project “New strategies against neurodegeneration”. IOPC has 1200m2 of recently remodelled laboratories equipped with all the necessary infrastructure for carrying out conventional organic and organometallic syntheses. In addition, it has at its disposal instruments for multinuclear NMR of liquids and solids, MS, GC/MS/MS, FT-IR, UV-Vis, DSC, GC, HPLC, glove box, elemental analyser, sonochemical and high pressure reactors, spinning band distillation apparatus, computer hardware for theoretical calculations and molecular modelling, etc. The funding for the research carried out in the IOPC comes from external sources and in particular from competitive national and international programmes (HCM, TMR, RTN, Marie Curie Fellowships, ToK-Dev). The IOPC has contacts with the industrial private sector for the development of new processes for the manufacture of commercial products and has also been involved in several collaborative programmes. Part of the very promising scientific results are included in national as well as international patents in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies. The IOPC has also been in collaboration with research groups from other Universities or Research Centres within the framework of nationally or internationally funded research programmes. Through participation in network projects, the IOPC has an impressive record of training of pre- and post-doctoral workers both from inside and outside of Greece.
